Hands-On with the ‘Galactagirl’ Alpha

Just by looking at Galactagirl you can already form a picture in your mind about the way the game will play. Watching the announcement trailer you imagine that it’s a cross between Mega Man, Sonic The Hedgehog and another old school game or two (Strider pops into my mind.) That assessment is one that the creator acknowledges on the game’s release page:

…inspired by retro classics such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Mega Man and Ninja Gaiden

Graphics are spot-on NES style and the music fits very well. The sound effects are good albeit a little repetitive but you have to remember that this is just the alpha version of the game. Keep in mind that a lot can (and probably will) change between this version of the game and the final product.

Basically you try and go fast like Ricky Bobby or Sonic while destroying enemies with your sword. Being able to home in from enemy to enemy, in a chain, in order to obliterate them is the game’s greatest strength; while simultaneously being its downfall at the moment. There were plenty of times that I chained enemies and then proceeded to bounce off a wall or through the game’s geometry and couldn’t proceed further. Again, this game is in alpha so as frustrating as these moments can be they don’t detract enough from the game to lessen the experience.
